Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson Review

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

Plot Outline

This book follows Lia who has been in competition with her friend to be the thinnest. Cassie ends up dying because of her eating disorder and she haunts Lia who is battling her eating disorder.

My Opinion

This book was quite difficult to get into as it was quite slow at the start. I do think that the author did a good job at portraying eating disorders. I really felt Lia’s struggles and at times the story was difficult to read as we see Lia’s condition getting slowly worse. There are a lot of metaphors used in this book which at times was quite confusing. All the metaphors made it difficult to separate what was real and what wasn’t. At the end, we get to see Lia getting the help that she needs which was a satisfying end to the story. This book is very popular with a lot of people and whilst I thought that it was ok I didn’t feel that it lived up to the hype.
