This week’s topic is debut novels that we are looking forward to in 2017. Very often I buy from authors that I have read from before but this year there are a lot of new authors that I really want to check out.
Caraval by Stephanie Garber- I am really excited for this book. I have already heard really positive reviews. This sounds like it is going to be similar to The Night Circus which I really enjoyed. Caraval is a mysterious game and two sisters become involved when one of them is kidnapped.
Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones- Liesl has heard stories about goblins but has never believed them until her sister is taken. In order to save her sister Liesl agrees to marry the Goblin King. This sounds like it is going to be an epic fantasy and I am looking forward to checking it out.
Frostblood by Elly Blake- Ruby is a Fireblood and she has to hide her powers from the Frostbloods. She joins a rebellion but she is taken by the Frostbloods and forced to compete in a tournament. This sounds similar to Red Queen and I am interested to see how this is different and whether it is better than Red Queen.
A List of Cages by Robin Roe- Adam helps the school’s psychologist and one of his first tasks is to track down a student. The student in question is his foster brother who he hasn’t seen in years. I’ve heard really good things about this book and I am excited to check it out.
Blood Rose Rebellion by Rosalyn Eves- Anna belongs to a family of powerful magic users but she has no magic. She ruins a spell and gets banished to Hungary. Whilst in Hungary she discovers that there is a rebellion forming. This sounds like it is going to be an interesting read.
Gilded Cage by Vic James- The world is ruled by those with magical powers and people must serve them. When a servant falls for one of them she faces a difficult choice. Her brother is joining a revolution to put an end to the controlling nobles. One of the aristocrats has unusual powers and he could use them for good or bad. This book looks as if it is going to follow three different characters. I am intrigued by the setting as it is set in an alternate England which sounds interesting.
One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus- This is a mystery/ thriller. What drew me to this book is that Pretty Little Liars is mentioned in the synopsis. When 5 teenagers get detention one of them gets murdered and the remaining 4 all look like suspects. I really want to expand my reading and read from different genres and I always enjoy a good mystery.
Poison’s Kiss by Breeana Shields- Marinda can kill men with just a kiss. This sounds similar to other YA books that have been published but what interests me is that this is based on Indian folklore which sounds really interesting.
Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts- There are a group of illegitimate children who live at the palace. When a royal chooses to sit at their table everything changes. This sounds like an interesting book as it follows the underdogs so to speak. It is the bastards that will end up saving the kingdom which no one ever expects.
Seven Days of You by Cecilia Vinesse- Sophia has seven days left in Toyko and there are seven days before Jamie arrives. This sounds like it is going to be a cute contemporary and I am interested in reading it as it is set in Japan and I’ve never read anything that has been set there before.
