Katarina’s family are con artists and she has been involved in many of their scams but she decides to leave this life behind and go to school and live a ‘normal’ life. However, she is soon drawn back into that world when someone’s art collection disappears. Kat’s father is the main suspect and she must steal back the paintings in order to save her father.
When I read the synopsis for this book I thought that it was going to be fast-paced and full of action but I was left disappointed when I discovered that it was neither of these things. For the majority of the book, I was really confused and didn’t know what was happening. At times I thought I was reading a sequel as things weren’t explained and characters were introduced that we were expected to already know. I felt that there was little character development and as a result, I didn’t feel attached to any of the characters. There was a large cast of characters in this book which got confusing as it was difficult to remember who was who. I was really disappointed as I was expecting to really enjoy this series but I will not be carrying on with it. A lot of people really enjoy Ally Carter’s books and I thought I would like them too. I have her other series; The Gallagher Girls which I will be trying to see if I like them any more than this series.
What did you think of this book?
Nine aliens left their home planet Lorien when it was under attack. Now there are nine aliens living on Earth. Lorien was being attacked by the Mogadorian and the Nine had to flee and hide on Earth. They look like ordinary humans so they can easily blend in however, they have powers. The first three aliens were killed and now the Mogadorian are after number four; John Smith.
When I first picked up this book I was excited to read it as I had heard a lot of really good things about it. I thought the plot sounded really interesting and I haven’t read that many books about aliens. I was left really disappointed with this book. I didn’t like any of the main characters and so I wasn’t interested in their story. Once I started reading it the story seemed very bland and not very memorable. The relationship in this book was too quick, John seemed to fall for Sarah very quickly and they were soon together. I would have liked to have seen the relationship develop at a slower pace as this felt too quick for my taste. The characters seemed very similar to other characters in YA books. The plot sounded really interesting and I was expecting a fast paced story however I found it to be very slow. The majority of this story was really slow and boring, the action parts even seemed quite slow paced. For me, this story was very similar to other YA books and I just didn’t get on with it. I know a lot of people really enjoy this series but it was just not for me. I have only read a few alien books but I haven’t enjoyed them so perhaps this genre is not for me. I do want to see the movie so I can see how it compares and maybe I will enjoy the movie more.
What did you think of this?
Tavia survived a plane crash that killed both of her parents. She begins to see strange visions of a boy that she has never seen before which leads her to believe that there are things about her past that she does not know. She soon discovers that she can’t trust anyone and that she may have been the intended target of the plane crash. She can only trust her friend and the guy that she keeps seeing.
When I was reading this book I found it to be very confusing as there were a lot of things happening and I don’t think that they were explained as well as they could have been. There was a complicated love triangle between Tavia’s best friend and the ghost of a guy that she started seeing. I thought that the love triangle was complicated and unnecessary and seemed to be only included because the majority of YA books have one. There were many parts in this story that were similar to many other YA books and as a result, the story was very predictable and in places boring because the story didn’t seem very original. The main character was really annoying and spent a lot of the book whining and as a result, I didn’t care about her and wasn’t interested in her story. I was disappointed with this book as I have heard a lot of people rave about Aprilynne Pike’s work but I really did not get on with this one. Although I won’t be carrying on with this series I would be interested to try some of her other books to see if I like them. I am interested in her Wings series as that is about fairies and I have really enjoyed reading fairy books in the past.
This week’s topic is Worst Love Interests. If you want to check out the Goodreads group then the link is here. I don’t usually dislike love interests in a book. When there is a love triangle I usually prefer one over the other but I wouldn’t necessarily say that they were the worst. For this list, I have a few love interests that I really did not like and a couple where I preferred the character with the other love interest.
The first character is Peeta from the Hunger Games. I really did not like him with Katniss. He was deeply in love with her but she wasn’t that interested in him. I would have preferred to have seen Katniss without a love interest as I don’t think it added too much to the story. I think if she had to be with someone it should have been someone who was a stronger character for me Peeta was a very weak character throughout the series.
Next we have Aspen from the Selection series. I really disliked Aspen and I always preferred America with Maxon. Aspen really annoyed me as he broke America’s heart but as soon as she was getting close to Maxon he came back into her life and told her that he loved her. I felt that the love triangle part of this series was a bit unnecessary.
Next is Xander from the Matched trilogy. Xander is the guy that Cassia is meant to be with, however, I really didn’t like them as a couple. I thought that they worked much better as friends. In my opinion, Ky was a much better choice for Cassia as they seemed to work better in a relationship. Xander and Cassia were forced to be together so their feelings for one another were not genuine, unlike Ky’s feelings.
I really disliked Conrad in this series and I couldn’t understand why Belly preferred him over Jeremiah. Conrad was always moody and he never seemed to be very nice to Belly whereas Jeremiah was always nice to her and tried to include her when Conrad often left her out. I was disappointed when she ended up with Conrad as I preferred her relationship with Jeremiah.
Lastly, we have Flynn from Falling Fast. I really disliked Flynn and I did not like him and River together. Flynn has some major anger issues and got angry at the smallest little thing. I did not like these two together at all and I didn’t think that their relationship was a healthy one.
Who did you put on your list?
This book follows River, a girl taking part in the school play of Romeo and Juliet. She ends up falling for the guy playing Romeo; Flynn. River is a true romantic and she really wants to experience love with Flynn but Flynn comes from a difficult background and is not the easiest of people to be around.
From the cover, I was expecting a really light-hearted contemporary novel. However, I really did not like the relationship in this book. Flynn gets angry at the smallest of things, whenever River mentions family or money Flynn gets extremely angry. Flynn gets angry at River just because his family is not very well off and whilst I can sympathise with that I felt that it was unnecessary that he got so angry. It came across as if he was blaming River for his family situation. Whilst Flynn got angry every few seconds River put up with this throughout the book. I personally did not think that this was a healthy relationship as Flynn was angry all the time but River seemed so blinded by love. This book is the first book in a series but I will not be carrying on with the series as I did not like the relationship or the characters. I was disappointed with this book as I was a expecting a much lighter story as the cover makes it appear like a cute contemporary novel. I felt that there was a real lack of romance in this book.
This was one of the biggest disappointments of last year. I really enjoy watching How To Get Away With Murder and this was on a list of recommended reads if you enjoy the show. I decided to pick it up as it sounded such an interesting concept and it sounded as if it would be dark and twisted. However, I found this book to be really disappointing and not at all what I was expecting.
Two boys have committed a terrible crime and their parents meet up to discuss what they are going to do about it. They meet up at a fancy restaurant to talk about the problem and to discuss what will happen. Everyone knows about the crime that has been committed but only the parents know that it was their children who did it. The parents will go to great lengths to protect their sons.
I decided to pick up this book as the concept sounded really interesting and unique. In the beginning, I found the story to be very slow going as the parents were just having a normal conversation and we knew very little about the crime that had been committed. The characters in the book are extremely well off and come across as being really snobby so I found them very difficult to relate to. The way they chose to deal with the problem seemed very unusual and I felt little sympathy for the characters. From reading the synopsis, I was expecting a lot more drama and action but I found the story to be very bland and boring. The only real bit of drama that we got was towards the end when we finally discovered what the boys had done. The characters were extremely pretentious and I really did not like any of the characters in this book. I was really disappointed with this book as I was expecting so much more from it. A lot of people really enjoy this book and give it a really good review and I really wish that I had been one of those people as I found the idea so interesting.
Have you read this? What did you think of it?
This week I have decided to share all of my negative reviews of books that I did not enjoy. I have quite a few books that I wanted to talk about so I thought I would dedicate a whole week to books that I found disappointing. I chose to do it this week as the Top 5 Wednesday topic for this week is also negative. I write a lot of posts talking about how much I have loved certain books but I don’t write as much about books that I have disliked and I would like to talk about books that have disappointed me/ I didn’t like a lot more.
For all of the books I mention this week, I am not saying that they are bad books but that I did just not get on with them or I found them to be not what I was expecting.
