My True Love Gave To Me Edited by Stephanie Perkins

My True Love Gave To Me

I recently got this lovely edition of My True Love Gave To Me edited by Stephanie Perkins. For those that don’t know, it is a collection of 12 short  winter romances. I have decided to post a review of each short story during the build up to Christmas and as there is 12 it is the perfect number. I will be posting a review every other day during the build up to Christmas.

Auto- Buy Authors

I know I haven’t posted in a while so I thought to get me back into posting I would  tell you about my auto-buy authors. These are authors that I will buy pretty much every one of their books as I enjoy them so much.

The first author is Sophie Kinsella/Madeline Wickham, I believe I have pretty much all of her books and although I haven’t read them all the ones I have read I really enjoyed. I really enjoy the Shopaholic series, but I think her standalone books are some of my favourites. I loved I’ve Got Your Number and Wedding Night. I recently read her first young adult novel Finding Audrey and I really enjoyed that one as well. I think Sophie Kinsella is really good at mixing serious with humorous which I like to see.

Sarah J Maas is a relatively new author to me, but I love everything I have read by her. The Throne of Glass series is really enjoyable and I highly recommend it. I have just purchased Queen of Shadows which I will be starting shortly. Her other series A Court of Thorns and Roses only came out this year but the first book was excellent and I can’t wait to read the second one.

Philippa Gregory is another one of my favourite authors, if you like historical fiction then she is the author for you. I am a huge fan of her books, I like her writing style and she writes about my favourite time periods; the Tudors and the War of the Roses. I am yet to read her latest book, but I did buy it almost as soon as it came out.

I love Rick Riordan’s books. The Percy Jackson series was one of my favourites when I was younger. I also really like the Heroes of Olympus series. I like how he incorporates Greek mythology to create a world of half-bloods and the camp that he creates for them.

Marissa Meyer is another new discovery of this year, but I know that I will buy anything she writes. The Lunar Chronicles are amazing, she creates really good characters that you can’t help but loving. I am excited to see how she finishes the series in Winter. I also can’t wait for her new book to come out next year called Heartless which is going to be about the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer Review

I thought I would write a post about the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. So far I have read the first three books which are out, the 4th book Winter comes out on the 12th November. I still need to get my hands on Fairest, but I thought I would share with you, my thoughts on the series so far. (FYI I LOVE IT!) All the books in the series are based on fairy tales, but they are set in the future. The characters and the world that Meyer has created is amazing and I have enjoyed reading the books and discovering more about the characters and the world. If you haven’t read all 3 books then I recommend that you don’t read this post as it may contain spoilers and I don’t want to ruin the series if you haven’t read it.

Cinder

Cinder

Cinder is a Cinderella retelling. The story is set in a futuristic China and we meet Cinder who is a cyborg. She lives with her stepmother and 2 stepsisters. She works as a mechanic and due to her being a cyborg she is seen as a second class citizen. When the Prince asks her to fix something for him, they start to have feelings for one another until secrets about her past are revealed at the ball.

I loved this book and I thought that it was an excellent start to the series. The pacing was quite fast and I found that I read it quite quickly. Towards the end, there is a plot twist but I did feel that this was quite predictable however it did not take away from how much I enjoyed this book. In this first book, we get an introduction to the Lunar race who live on the moon and are ruled by the evil Queen Levana. Levana is such an evil character and after reading Cinder I just wanted to read more about her because she is so interesting.

Scarlet

Scarlet

In the second book, we are introduced to Scarlet who lives with her grandmother and this book is based on Red Riding Hood. At the start of the book, we get two perspectives; Scarlet’s and Cinder’s who is looking for a way to get out of prison. Scarlet is looking for her grandmother who has gone missing and she meets Wolf who has information about where she could be. Their journey to find Scarlet’s grandmother leads them to Cinder and they team together to prevent Queen Levana from marrying Prince Kai.

Firstly I want to start off by saying Scarlet and Wolf are one of the best couples ever created, I really like them and I like them much better than Cinder and Kai as a couple. I felt that this was a great continuation of the series as we got to learn more about the world and the characters. I also thought the way that Meyer entwined Scarlet’s and Cinder’s stories worked really well and it switched from the different perspectives really easily without it feeling jumpy which you sometimes get with multiple perspectives.

Cress

Cress

Cress is the third book in the series and is a retelling of Rapunzel. Cress is a young girl who has been trapped on a satellite her entire life. Cress is the only one who can help Cinder, Captain Thorne, Scarlet and Wolf. The group rescue Cress from her satellite but they become separated and Cress and Captain Thorne end up spending a lot of time together. The group are still trying to stop Queen Levana.

Whilst Cress and Thorne are separated from the group they get to know each other a lot more. Meyer manages to weave all the side stories together really well. I enjoy reading about all the characters and Meyer dedicates equal time to all of the characters. Whilst I did really enjoy this book I would have liked to have seen more of Scarlet and Wolf as I just love those two together. Cress is left on a huge cliffhanger so I am eagerly awaiting the release of Winter.

Have you read this series? What do you think of it?
